Job Description:
The Staff Accompanist/Music Director for Musical Theatre is responsible for accompanying various musical theatre classes, music direction of our musicals, and coordinating vocal coaching and serving as a vocal coach. This is a full-time 10-month exempt position. The position reports to the Director of Musical Theatre in the Division of Arts and Humanities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
• None
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Coordinate vocal coaching and serve as vocal coach for 60 Musical Theatre students
• Serve as accompanist for incoming student audition days and juries
• Act as music director of musical productions (typically 3 a year)
• Serve as the accompanist for musical theatre classes throughout the year (e.g., Musical Theatre Lab; Acting the Song I, II, and III; Musical Theatre Performance Seminar)
• Assist with auditions for prospective students
• Teach one class per semester (usually MUA 4475, Performance Project)
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Excellent pianist and sight reader
• Extensive knowledge of the musical theatre repertoire
• Experience with basic keyboard programming/MainStage
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
Qualifications:
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, Musical Theatre, Applied Piano, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Master's Degree (MM or MFA) in Vocal Coaching, Conducting for the Stage, or related field preferred
Experience:
• 4+ years experience as a vocal coach of both art and musical theatre music
• 4+ years experience as a music director
• 4+ years experience as an audition accompanist
• Experience working in a higher education setting preferred
Physical Requirements:
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and standing
• Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move 25 pounds regularly
Hours Expectation:
This is a full-time, exempt 10-month position. 35 hours per week August 16-June 15.
