Position overview

We are seeking a knowledgeable and driven Senior Underwriter to join our Personal Lines team. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and assessing risks associated with personal lines insurance policies, including new applications, renewals, and policy changes. This role also serves as a key advisor to internal teams and agency partners while supporting the development and compliance of underwriting staff.

As a senior member of the team, you’ll play an integral role in ensuring underwriting standards are met, while also contributing to training, business development, and agency relations. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, in-office/in-person position at our Honolulu office location. This is not a remote position.

Position Purpose

The goal of the Senior Underwriter is to evaluate the risk exposure to hazards, determine the terms to the acceptance of the risk, generate profitable business for the company and build agent/producer business relations through policy servicing and agency visits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and underwrite new and renewal business based on established company guidelines and risk analysis
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting standards and maintain production timelines
  • Approve complex or high-risk underwriting referrals from junior underwriters
  • Support ongoing training and technical development of the underwriting team
  • Analyze risk reports, inspections, and loss trends to support informed underwriting decisions
  • Conduct regular agency visits to promote products, support training, and strengthen relationships
  • Monitor and analyze performance reports to identify agency profitability and growth opportunities
  • Assist in the review and development of new products, policy revisions, and strategic planning
  • Collaborate with claims, risk control, and marketing teams to enhance policy performance
  • Support management with production analysis, market conditions, and agency performance strategies
  • Contribute to process improvements, data security, and department projects
  • Provide user testing and feedback for IT systems as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in Property & Casualty underwriting (preferred)
  • Deep understanding of insurance underwriting practices and risk assessment
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven ability to interpret data and make informed decisions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Proficiency in policy administration systems and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
